Rish Outfield's reviews
This was unquestionably (go ahead, question) the best horror film of 1998. That it came out the last week of the year didn't hurt, though. In contrast to most of the horror films released in '98, I actually found The Faculty to be scary. I have always been terrified by the body snatcher tales (written a couple myself), and this one was a mother good one. I felt the trailers were unappealing and played up the wrong aspects of the film, but I enjoyed it much more than I anticipated. Kevin Williamson is king of the 90's horror screenplays. He really created some believable, interesting characters, and a situation truly shiver-worthy. Elijah Wood now has a fan in me. I mean, I WAS that kid in high school. Delilah was a sharp, icy, bitch, and I would have been in love with her too. There were a couple of moments when the effects might have been improved, and a scene or two that was rushed, but they were in the minority. Overall, the movie succeeded: some nice scares, unexpected twists and turns, and a satisfying ending.
Best Scare: Just the knowledge that ANYONE could be one of them...including me.
I'd Recommend It To: Any horror fan who has ever been in high school.

The tyranist's thoughts
So far this is the best horror movie of 1998. I allow that as I am writing this there are a couple that I have yet to see, but so far this is by far the best. It goes back to my love of they're-slowly-replacing-us movies. This one is firmly planted in that particular sub-genre alongside many films such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Stepford Wives, and even this year's Disturbing Behavior. Fortunately, this one is simply fantastic. Williamson did his normal wonderful job and Rodriguez put together something that I can love.
A small addendum since I just saw this again in a local theatre. This is definitely the best horror film to come out of 1998 and is better than anything I have seen thus far in 1999. Kevin Williamson's script is marvelous (I've read an early draft of the script that was impossible to put down) and Roderiguez translates it to the screen better than I could ever hope. The repeat viewing wasn't as bad as I feared it might be. It doesn't matter that I knew everything that happened and was going to happen the second time around. I was still fascinated by the characters and the story that was playing out on the screen. I will definitely own this one on DVD some day.
