Rish Outfield's reviews
Ahh, the classic story: Boy has girl, boy accidentally kills girl with lawn
mower, boy obsesses about girl with girl's severed head, boy brings girl back
to life using parts from exploding prostitutes. The cover of this film
boasted a Bill Murray quote: "If you only see one movie this year, it should
be ‘Frankenhooker.'" Obviously, this affectionate review was given without
actually seeing the movie. The creators of Basket Case tried to make a
comedy this time...I think. Unfortunately, this film is both too slow and
too sick to be considered a worthwhile comedy. Horror, then? Well, maybe.
It was really dull and plodding, almost as if it were adapted from a
half-hour TV show, and used the same script. Really poor special effects
here--worse in many ways than Basket Case's 1980's effects, yet the
lightening (bringing Frankenhooker to life) effects were great. I don't get
it. Did I mention this was twisted and sick, but never funny? This had a
couple of human moments, always featuring Jeffery and Elizabeth, but they
were usually brief--making way for more stupidity. The girl who played the
title role was actually very pretty, but only used for the last 20 minutes or
so. The ending REALLY blew. I mean, it blew sheep.
Best Scare: Well, there were crawling body parts, but they weren't scary.
I'd Recommend It To: People who really like the title.
The tyranist's thoughts
Can you believe that someone wanted to give this to me for my birthday? As soon as I found out that this was made by
the same genius behind Basket Case, it dropped a lot in my estimation. After seeing it,
however, this movie is kind of fun. I mean exploding hookers, death by lawnmower (although not even close to as good as
Dead Alive), a hooker made from other hookers parts, exploding Johns, and super crack.
Cheaply made, it shows its limitations. It is still pretty fun to watch even if you have to wade through hours of Jeffery
lamenting his late girlfriend. Also, watch for the same hotel that was used in Basket Case.
