The tyranist's thoughts
As a modern, jaded horror fan, it is often difficult for me to watch these older horror films without wondering how anyone could possibly be scared by them. What they do usually have going for them, that isn't much invested in today, is atmosphere. They seemed to work a lot harder on creating a creepy atmosphere through the characters rather than through the set and special effects.
If you've seen the new version, then you'll recognize much of the old one with a couple major differences in plot. If they had translated this one straight to the modern screen there would have been much less call for special effects, and we can't have that, can we?
I liked Vincent Price and Carol Ohmart quite a bit. They made a wonderful, bickering, spiteful couple. I also liked the script quite a bit. There were a couple of dated plot devices and a couple details that were never really properly explained, but on the whole, the movie was decently made and watchable even today.
If you enjoyed the remake, and I know few people did, then you'll want to see where it came from, if not, then you'll probably enjoy this one a little more anyway.

Rish's Reviews
One of my major flaws (and believe me, I have many) is procrastination. I procrastinate paying bills, schoolwork, getting out of bed, important meetings, getting my oil changed, the day of my repentance, and on and on. And here's a perfect example: I saw this movie more than six months ago. And while tyranist and I saw it together, he wrote up his review that very same week, while mine has been significantly later in coming.
Yes, I hated the recent remake. But I really enjoyed the original. A lot of it had to do with Vincent Price, who remains fascinating to watch in every role. I enjoyed the dynamic between Price and his conniving wife (I aspire to have a marriage like that someday). Oh, and that one little guy who was a snot to Captain Kirk in the Courtmartial "Star Trek" episode was also in this. The film was fun and light, and had a neat premise. The ending was a little preposterous, but ah well. I wouldn't classify this as a classic, but I'd still recommend it.
Note: In case you didn't know, this, as most of William Castle's films, came complete with a gimmick, and this one's was "Emerg-O," a simple gag in which a skeleton on a wire swung down above the audience at a key moment in the film.
