Rish Outfield's reviews
Surprisingly clever, well-written, and entertaining. It wasn't a classic,
mind you, but it was well-worth seeing. It was well-acted, featuring a couple
of very attractive co-stars (including Necessary Roughness's Harley Jane
Kozak), and a good pace. It had some nudity, some cool scenes, nice framing,
and an honestly original plot. Parts reminded me of I Know What You Did Last
Summer, but not in a bad way. The ending was pretty uninspired, but not
disappointing. I really liked it, and place it quite high on my slasher
mantel of honour.
Best Scare: Killer is dressed as a Harlequin in one sequence
I'd Recommend It To: Pretty Much Any Horror Fan
The tyranist's thoughts
This one was one of the gems that you search and search for in the horror genre.
I watched it fully expecting the typical killer-gets-a-lot-of-barely-dressed-college-girls
and was pleasantly surprised when I saw a well-thought out (dare I say, plausible)
plot that actually kept us guessing and edgy. And to tell you the absolute truth, when
the harlequin moved, I almost screamed.
The thing that sets this one apart from all of its dirty little subgenre is the fact that
the girls act with a great deal of intelligence. For the most part they stick together.
They do almost everything in their power to contact the proper authorities. The
only mistake they made was the one that set off the entire chain of events anyway,
the killing of their house mother. It wasn't the highest budget production, but the
film carried itself well, obviously much better than I expected.
I had the chance to go back and catch this one again recently. Partly I just wanted
to update the skulls to the newest list, but really I wanted to see if it held up. We
saw a lot of movies in our first 100 that I wonder about. With our now jaded eyes
would they seem as good or bad? Thankfully, this one seemed pretty much the same.
It is original and entertaining and contains real conflict where a lot of other horror
movies just pretend to have conflict for the sake of setting up death. The ending is
somewhat surprising and vaguely disatisfying in a good way. The acting is exemplary
for its period and under a second viewing four years later, I still really like this one.
You should definitely check this one out if you can find it.
