Rish Outfield's reviews
To me, this is the perfect Roger Corman film. Low-budget, no big stars, not
taxing on the brain, hokey monsters, gratuitous sex and violence, laughable
moments that are supposed to be taken seriously, etc.
The part of me that will forever be thirteen years old adored this film. It
had a pretty good story, and the monsters, though ripping off Creature From
the Black Lagoon somewhat, were ugly and fun to watch. It featured a score
by James Horner, who like many of Corman's collaborators, would go on to
great things (like Casper!). And Doug McClure, who my dad introduced me to
through the "Land That Time Forgot" movies, wasn't bad either. This film
comes from my favourite period of horror--the early Eighties, and entertained
me a great deal in its one hour and twenty minutes. It's nothing to go nuts
about, but I recommend it anyway. Plus, what a title!
The tyranist's thoughts
One of the things I love about movies that are labelled "Roger Corman Classic" is that my expectations automatically drop enough that I
might enjoy the movie. In this case, it was barely enough.
In a stuggling fishing community that is suffering the classic American conflict of whether or not to sell out to a big corporation, people
are suddenly disappearing. Of course, since this is a monster movie, we get to see every disappearance and there is no mystery to it. Once
people finally figure out they have to work together, it's almost too late. Slap on a silly biological explanation and a few somewhat cool
monster costumes and you have a movie.
There is one amazing thing about these monsters that I feel you should know before you see the movie. They have are able to rip a young
lass's bra/bikini top/shirt off without actually ripping into the flesh underneath. What makes this remarkable is that the monsters' arms
appear to be crude latex gloves on the end of a long stick. It should be noted, however, that whenever one of those claws gets within a foot
of anyone male, massive damage will occur. Anything from losing a significant portion of their flesh to having their heads crushed.
The movie was filled with a ton of typical B-movie lameness that makes it a great party movie. The acting wasn't as abominable as it
sometimes is and the plot at least made a little sense (most of the time). See it if you will, but I suspect you know what you're getting
into without me telling you. This probably best for a long evening of camp horror. At least you'll have fun that way.
