Rish Outfield's reviews
Interesting. This was a vampire film in which the word "vampire" is never
uttered. It was strange, haunting, and disturbingly unusual. Some of it got
a tad lofty and leisurely, but that was surely thrown in to please the
arthouse crowd. David Bowie was surprisingly good. There was also some
nipple-sucking lesbianism (say what you will about that). A little brutal,
it pulled no punches in ensuring it WOULDN'T get a Little Kid Lamely Survives
skull. The best thing about this, though, were the incredible, and I mean,
INCREDIBLE old age makeup effects courtesy of Dick Smith. WOW.
The tyranist's thoughts
This is a very stylized, very artsy vampire film that probably won't appeal to horror fans as much as it will to mod fans.
The premise isn't a terrible one, but there is almost no horror for the audience. These are the most human vampires, I have
ever seen. They can walk in the daylight, they do not fear crosses, they age (albeit rather suddenly). The only real vampire
trait that they seem to have is the Hunger. They drink blood to keep themselves young. Oh, and they like sex. There is one
Lesbian love scene in the middle that was actually rather tastefully done. Unfortunately, it brought back weird memories of
The Haunting of Morella. David Bowie was pretty good, but the make up they used on
him was fantastic. This is the one redeeming part of the movie. If you watch it for no other reason, you should appreciate
that I don't think I have ever seen aging make up done more convincingly.
