Rish Outfield's reviews
This was very stupid. But if you rented it, you knew that going in. A-Pix
should be synonymous with terrible, grade Z horror, but still, we watch them,
don't we? There were a few of the traditional so-bad-it's-funny moments, but
they were very few. Some subplots were so tacked-on and unconnected to the
rest of the--heh--story, they were only confusing. The gore was over-the-top,
but sparing, and it was all really juvenile, probably made for twelve
year-olds (nahh, even I would've said, "This is just too stupid," at twelve).
One thing I would've agreed on back then, though, is, I am so SICK of
A-Pix's little is-there-gonna-be-nudity teases, that it made me somewhat
angry. This film took absolutely no chances (you could tell exactly who
would live and who would die and in what order) and was thus forgettable and
un-scary. The filmmakers tried to make us sympathize with the killer,
suspect him, rule him out, and then root for his death, all within an
hour . . . to ill effect. The kids were particularly annoying, too. I
understand, having worked with them, that it's hard to do a movie wherein the
heroes are children, but come on! Quite a good cast, for such crap. Of
course, there's Clint Howard. But what was David Warner doing in something
like this (he tortured a naked Jean-Luc Picard once!)? Olivia Hussey, once
so beautiful and alluring as Juliet, is now a schizo ex-nurse. Jan Michael
Vincent? And David Naughton was the American Werewolf in London...oh how the
mighty have fallen!
Best Scare: No scares, though there were some good gross-outs.
I'd Recommend It To: Anyone who wants to see it after looking at the box.
You're an adult, you know what you're getting into.
The tyranist's thoughts
A-Pix. That should be all that has to be said. Of course, I somehow delude myself anew everytime. They are making horror films
here. Don't they know who their core audience is? We could handle something scary, perhaps some realistic gore, or maybe even
a little justified nudity in at least one of these films. I am sick and tired of being teased by these movies. They promise
violence. They promise nudity. They promise to be at least entertaining. None of the above. I think I am going to veto any
A-Pix feature that Rish picks up from now on. I have to confess that this one was my fault, but still. I will repent my
failure. I think Clint Howard is as great an overlooked actor as anybody, but he probably can't sleep at nights now. This
movie simply redefines terrible.
