The tyranist's thoughts
Horror through and through, this turned out to be surprisingly enjoyable. As much as I dislike Leelee Sobieski, somehow this one is worth seeing.
Two brothers are road-tripping on their way to pick up some hot young thing and then to head home. On the way they have a CB installed and start to prank. Naturally it backfires on them and a killer somewhere in the league of Michael Myers starts tracking them down.
I'm not a prankster by nature and I really don't find them funny, but that didn't work against this film. If you had to reduce it that far, it could be called an anti-prank cautionary tale. The plot kept me interested, but suspense doesn't really build the whole way through. There are just a couple too many "Ahh, we've gotten rid of him and can go back to our normal lives" moments. The tension just flies out of the room when they do that.
The acting isn't bad and there are moments when the dialogue is outstanding. Interestingly, this made me want to go on a road-trip rather than making me want to stay home.
This is a pretty straightforward post-modern slasher. Not much death, but it's got its exciting moments and it's pretty fun. See it if you are into the new slashers, but if you're an old-school fan, you'll probably loathe this.

Rish's Reviews
This was a cool, fun, intense film. I'm happy I got to see it with tyranist by my side.
I enjoyed the basic premise, and the characters. The dynamic between the brothers was nice. Paul Walker somehow manages to be Adonis pretty, yet likeable and non-threatening (how is that possible?). Steve Zahn was great as the funny, mischievous, ne'er-do-well brother, who I related to more than I'll admit. Unlike tyranist, while I'm not the world's biggest Leelee Sobieski fan, I like her alright. She's certainly more likable in this one than some of the stuff she's done and if you got a couple drinks in me, I'd probably even say she's hot. The faceless truck driver (the same villain as in Duel?) was menacing, evil, and interesting. The Silence of the Lambs's Ted Levine gives him a country twang that offsets his single-minded cunning . . . a good choice. A very nice, scary villain.
I wish I had seen this in the theater, but as I didn't, we got to check out the neat DVD features, including alternate endings (what were there, nine?). While one of the endings patently sucked, the others were all pretty good, especially the original version which is presented in its entirety rather than just highlights (what a great idea). The ending that ended up in the film was probably the most crowd-pleasing, and certainly leaves things open for a sequel (which is smarter), but I didn't feel it was the most honest ending. Regardless, this was a great movie. If I had seen it in 2001, it might have given The Others a run for its money as Best Horror Film. Highly recommended.
