Rish Outfield's reviews
A couple of days after seeing this flick, I got to meet Amy Locane. It
actually sparked a pretty funny joke that's really too long and convoluted to
go into here.
But let me keep this review short by saying--this was NOT a good movie. It
wasn't scary, wasn't very interesting, made very little sense, and when it
finally ended (with a predictable anti-climax that was one of the film's high
points ), there was a relieved sigh by all. Louis Gossett Jr. had
top-billing, and what was he even doing in this? And are mummies really that
scary? Well, I suppose if they're computer-generated (The Mummy 1999) or
make a creepy "gnnaahhh" sound ("Scooby Doo"), but not here.It was dull,
talky, dull, long, dull, and inexplicably boring. It's not worth seeing,
unless you can use it to get a laugh out of one of its stars.
The tyranist's thoughts
Based on Bram Stoker's The Jewel of Seven Stars (how faithful it is I cannot tell you since I've never read it), this
mummy tale seems to be a release designed to capitalize on the popularity of Stoker and Universal's Mummy franchise. Of course,
this is the video that says on the box, "Not affiliated with Universal Pictures," but we know the truth. You can probably skip
this one in favor of both better Stoker movies and Mummy movies.
The writing on this one sticks out pretty bad. Not that the dialogue is terrible or anything, but the story is confusing and
difficult to get into. Perhaps I should blame the director. Wait, its the same person. What do you know, but its the same
person responsible for The Dorm that Dripped Blood, another terribly confusing and
slow movie. The story isn't actually terrible and there are some cool little plot twists that make things interesting. The
acting is on par. Watch it if you have nothing better to do.
