The tyranist's thoughts
There have been a lot of ideas for slasher movies over the years and in spite of what ends up on the screen, most of them
are actually pretty good. All you have to do is come up with an idea for a serial killer of some sort, give him a weapon,
preferably unique, and set him on some high school or college kids. Instant slasher. Mortuary is built on that
formula, but I can't decide where it goes wrong. Was it a bad idea in the first place or is it just that the execution
fails? Not to say that the movie itself is bad, it really isn't, it just ends up being completely mediocre which in a lot
of significant ways means its worse than a bad horror movie.
So there's the usual crop of young college students and two of them decide to go steal some tires from the warehouse owned
by the local mortuary. Well, one of them ends up dead and then the fun starts.
The killer is actually pretty cool up until he is unmasked. After that, it doesn't work as well. The acting was actually
fair for this level of production and the dialogue was even good sometimes. When this movie worked, it worked pretty well,
but when it didn't, it was almost inexplicable. Really the best thing about it was the early scenes involving the killer.
See it if you want. It definitely falls into the early 80's slasher field and has some things worth watching for.
