The tyranist's thoughts
I somewhat regret that as I write this review, I have never seen The Mummy's Hand and thus do not know how the series opens. I do know that this bears only peripheral resemblance to the classic 1932 version of The Mummy which is sort of unusual for Universal at this time. In some ways I'm very glad that it isn't related simply because it would lessen my opinion of the original.
So there's this mummy named Kharis and that was unleashed when an expedition to Egypt recovered Princess Ananka's tomb. Sworn to protect her grave for eternity and animated by Tanna leaves, the mummy begins to track down the members of the expedition who are still alive.
This one features the traditional torch-wielding mob which was initiated with the classic line, "Get out the torches." The plot is really a straight-forward revenge plot. The elements that they did borrow from the first movie are spare and not really prominent. Lon Chaney's bum-legged Mummy is the one that will be copied for years to come even though it bears little resemblance to Karloff's originial. Really, this one is pretty forgettable. Not bad, just mediocre in the extreme. Skip on to the next one if you can.
