Rish Outfield's reviews
Chuck Heston plays Doctor Robert Neville, who has survived the apocalypse due to an experimental vaccine, left alone in the world with the few survivors, who have mutated into a form of intelligent, religious zealot vampire that call themselves "the Family." By day, he is the ruler of all he surveys, but by night, he boards himself into his fortress while the hordes attempt to destroy him. It's lonely, dude (a lot like the life of a certain Mr. Outfield), until he finds out he's not alone in the world.
I read Richard Matheson's book, I Am Legend a year ago and loved it. It was so frightening, moving and timelessly powerful that it's already one of my favourite books. The film was not so timeless, but some of it worked just the same. They stressed the Action part of the story over the Horror, but that actually worked pretty well. There were some interesting twists and turns, and I liked the characters. Plus, this has to be the only PG rated film on the site that featured gratuitous nudity, so it's noteworthy there, too. Parts of the book have been altered, especially when it comes to the other people Heston comes in contact with, and while I'd love to see a more faithful adaptation of the book, this is a very entertaining and satisfying version.
I, as well as everyone else of my generation, have grown up thinking Charlton Heston is a swaggering, scenery-chewing, punchline from a much campier time in actor history, but I've recently become something of a fan. There's a stubborn, macho heroism to the man that speaks to my inner Ben Hur, yearning to breathe free.

The tyranist's thoughts
Once upon a time I had a good friend who was eager to produce a site similar to the HFC that would have been devoted to apocalyptic film. I had thought that in the course of helping him with the site (you know I volunteered because I don't see enough movies) I would see this one. Here we are years later and I finally picked it up for the HFC. I shouldn't have waited.
One of the things that has eternally disappointed me about certain brands of apocalyptic movie is the way that the loneliness is too emphasized. Granted, that is where most of the story often is and it would truly be a terrible part of the human condition at that point, but in all of these stories where the loneliness is overplayed, there are always others who show up later in the movie. Why couldn't we have reached the action sooner?
The Omega Man does a fine job with this. We aren't too far into the movie when the other characters are introduced and I suppose we know he's never alone as long as the Family is there. The balance in this one feels much better than most.
Charlton Heston once again does a fantastic job in what could be called a quirky science fiction piece. If I ever think up something equivalent to the Scream Fiends for science fiction, Chuck's going to be the first one on my list.
See this movie. They will try to tell you it is only science fiction, but for us horror fanatics, there is plenty to tantalize.
