Rish Outfield's reviews
A friend of mine worked on this film, so it could've been worse. Still,
that's the only reason we ever rented this one. It was really low-budget and
really early 80's, but parts of it were still fun to watch. Other parts,
however, dragged along at the pace of an underwater James Cameron shoot.
Meg Tilly, sister of Jennifer Tilly (whether she's a better actor or more
attractive than her sister is debatable--in fact, I've debated it), is the
virgin here, mistreated by a jealous hottie and her toothbrush-wielding pal.
The undead killer is very clearly a dummy with laser lights buzzing around
his eyes, but if you can believe it, that didn't bother me. The killer's
victims are dispatched by scaring them to death, a frightening and
seldom-used idea. The reanimated dead that show up at the end of the film
are notable because they are still dead, merely floating, and they break
apart when you hit them. The last scare is one of the most insulting I've
ever seen, but it still scared me.
Oddly, this Horror film was rated PG (as explained to me, there was quite a
dearth in the PG-rated Horror category, so this was quickly made to fill the
void. I was told that it made obscene amounts of money--I'm talking an
unbelievable sum here, which made me wonder why I had never heard of it), so
the violence and sex are pretty much absent, and the scares are more
traditional.
Best Scare: One of the floating corpses is kicked, and the kicker's shoe
breaks through its stomach, spilling out squirming larvae. Very
cringe-worthy.
Note: I think we once said we'd never review any PG-rated or Made-For-TV
movies on this site, but it's an exception due to my relationship to it.
That doesn't explain all the others, though, does it?
The tyranist's thoughts
Rish begged and begged to see this movie for a long time (well, maybe one 'begged'),
so when we finally saw it I was amazed at the amount of scorn he displayed for
what is a pretty standard horror movie. Unfortunately, this is a much more modest
version of the typical sorority house initiation gone wrong plot line. Yes, it lacks
the simple pleasures that accompany most of this subgenre, like a lot of nudity.
On the redeeming side, they do spend a lot of time building suspense. Of course,
nothing is scary when the suspense is broken, but at least they gave lip service to
the effort. There are a lot of bad looking undead things in this and a plot that
seems drawn out from a little. The ending is inexplicable (how'd she get in
there when everyone else practically had to break windows?) and more than a
little dumb. Adam West is a jerk even though he is only in about five minutes
of the movie. This movie is pretty typical of its period and the whole desire to
cash in on the horror boom.
Total Skulls: 20
