Rish Outfield's reviews
A silly Phantom of the Opera ripoff with a TERRIBLE title, folks. But the
movie wasn't so bad. Some of it was a lot of fun, although stupid, and I
think tyranist wanted to buy this one. I can't over-emphasize how silly it
was. There were a couple of neato, creative murders (like this guy who is
killed using the escalator--cool!), but that was the highpoint. I guess it
was supposed to be a tragedy (like we couldn't tell that with Morgan
Fairchild being in it), with the mutilated teen forever prevented from being
with his girl, but it remained very light all the way through (though said
mutilated teen did go a little wacko toward the end . . . what teen doesn't,
mutilated or not?). This is my favourite Pauly Shore movie, though. Mostly
because he's not such an *@#! (you're not going to edit this review, are
you?), as was his trademark.
Best Scare: This is no fun anymore. I should've stayed in bed.
The tyranist's thoughts
For a movie with this bad of a title and a premise that doesn't come close to seeming entertaining, I sure had fun watching
this movie. Once again, though, I love mall movies. This is basically a modern adaptation of Phantom of the Opera in
the same way that Clueless is a modern adaptation of Emma. It is pretty well-thought out even though it is a
movie that didn't really ever need to be made. There are a couple of scenes that show a little love for Hong Kong martial arts
cinema, but mostly this is standard horror fare. My biggest complaint is that there is never really a definitive villain. You
kind of end up rooting for all three sides at different moments. Still, I'm a little fond of the heroine right now and the movie
could have been much, much worse.
