The tyranist's thoughts
The only reason this one got rented was because Jill Schoelen was in it. Now I know that doesn't seem like a good reason to most of you, but if you've been with us for very long, you know that when it comes to Ms. Schoelen, I cannot resist. Robert Englund playing the phantom was really very peripheral, but nice to have.
Do I really need to summarise the plot for you? I mean, really, if you don't know the basic story by now, chances are you're too young to appreciate horror from the '80s anyway. For this particular incarnation, they've modernized the story a bit and there are a few more supernatural elements. For the most part this is the same old story though.
As much as I like Ms. Schoelen, it bothered me to notice that the singing was obviously not her. I don't know that they could have done it any better, but it drew me out of the story a bit. The supernatural elements don't seem out of place, however, and the overall feel of the movie is pretty true to the general emotion toward this story for the '80s. After all, everyone was trying to cache in on the musical, and straying even a bit from the musical's basic formula was sure to be met with derision.
I've seen better translations of this, but it wasn't bad. If you like the '80s and like either Robert Englund or Jill Schoelen, it is definitely worth seeing.
