The tyranist's thoughts
I always appreciate religion based horror that works at making sure the contents of the movie ring true. There's just something about a biblical threat that is more creepy and disturbing than devil worshippers will be any day. Unless, of course, we're talking about The Wicker Man.
A cop, who happens to be a failed priest, stumbles onto (or is blatantly lead to depending on your point of view) a key plot in the second war in heaven. The angel Gabriel it seems wants a certain soul and is killing to find it. They, along with Lucifer, converge on a small town in Arizona and the battle that will help determine the outcome of the second war in heaven ensues.
Christopher Walken is his usual nasty self and really very good as Gabriel. I also really liked Eric Stoltz's performance as Simon and Viggo Mortensen's performance as Lucifer. The lovely Virginia Madsen makes things nice too. Most of all, the little girl makes the movie.
We ignored this movie for a very long time, and we shouldn't have. It really deserves to be seen and is one of the best of the biblical horror flicks. I'm hoping that I can get to its sequels soon. Not that I would expect them to live up to this one.
