Rish Outfield's reviews
You know, this was a pretty solid little horror film. It was well-written,
acted, filmed, and moved a slow, but steady pace. There was some
predictability, but it usually worked for the movie's advantage. I could
tell that a subplot or two was shaved off, but it wasn't obvious. The
creature, though not as well-lit as in the first movie, is still great and
fun to watch. There was even a little emotion thrown in for good measure.
This had a pretty impressive cast. Ami Dolenz was in it, as a rebellious
teen (as rebellious as a girl who idolizes Olivia Newton-John), and you know
I like her. Andrew Robinson, from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" and
Hellraiser, plays her father, the new sheriff, and he was very good.
Scream Queen Linnea Quigley appears, sans shirt, as usual. The youngest kid
from "Charles In Charge" is in it. And last, but see it anyway, Soleil Moon
Frye shows up.
Some may be angered that the origin of Pumpkinhead is altered from the first
film, but it didn't bother me. I just assumed this was another Pumpkinhead
in another town, just like the Boogeyman that lived under your bed may have
been a different Boogeyman from the one that ate my little brother.
The ending falls short, but just barely. I think this could have been a
great movie, but ended up just a good one. And I don't know who's to blame
for that, I just don't know enough about movies yet. In a way, though this
was a much lighter film than its predecessor, I enjoyed this one more.
Especially since the heroes and villains were more cut-and-dried this time
out.
Best Scare: I don't recall, but I'm sure there was something.
I'd Recommend It To: Monster fans, winged monkeys, and a lot of other people. (I'm getting lazy, aren't I?)
The tyranist's thoughts
Whenever we rent a sequel there is a sort of dread anticipation that it will be absolutely terrible. Often this is true.
Sometimes it is not. And once in a while it just doesn't seem to matter at all. This one is loosely connected with the first
film, but it contains none of the horror that the first one did. Instead it feels very rushed and not very thought out. It
wasn't a terrible movie, but it really didn't accomplish what it could have. Ami Dolenz was her normal self and Andrew
Robinson was really pretty good. It might seem kind of funny, but this movie reminded me of
Sweet Sixteen a lot. Maybe it was just that the pretty young thing just moved into town and people started dying. The
atmosphere was definitely similar. This is probably worth seeing in tandem with the first movie, but you won't miss much if
you don't.
