The tyranist's thoughts
I like the zombie movies, especially when they are sci-fi zombie movies. This one is
based on a video game that I never played, but all the same, I'll see anything that
promises zombies.
So the future is ruled by a mega-corporation, auspiciously named "Umbrella," and
they have been mucking about with things that they shouldn't have. The whole
system shuts down and a group of operatives are sent into the underground
facility to figure out what happened.
As much as I enjoyed the action and the story, there were times that it did feel
like I was playing a game and that the plot was being dictated to me. There were
quite a few instances of "now go here and do this and then go there and do that."
Still, Milla Jovovich is fun to watch and the slick production had enough in
common with the "Alien" franchise that I really didn't mind. It isn't the most
intelligent horror flick you'll see (but then they rarely are intelligent).
The movie was a little shorter than I expected coming in under two hours, and
perhaps that explains a few of the dropped sub-plots. Most of the time they
work really hard to distract the audience from the plot though. While it isn't as
gory as most zombie flicks and in fact a lot of the gore is of the off-screen
variety, there is a ton of violence. Interesting that we are so much more tolerant
of the violent than the aftermath thereof. Anyway, as far as zombie movies go,
this one was pretty good. It did bear a striking resemblance to
Aliens if that movie had been filled with zombies. Since a lot of people
liked Aliens perhaps they'll like this. Just don't go in expecting a strong
plot and you'll be okay.
Note: The theatre that I saw this in had a messed up projector and about the last 20 minutes
of the flick jumped a lot. It was pretty distracting so I hope I didn't miss anything important.
Not that they resolved any of the plot holes. I'm just worried about any Skulls I may have
missed.
Rish's Reviews
I gotta admit, when I first saw the trailer and TV spots, I thought this movie looked
like hot, steaming crap. I didn't go to it, had no intention of doing so, and it wasn't
until I read tyranist's positive review that I gave it a chance. And it wasn't half bad.
This was not a great movie, by any stretch. But hey, it was a pretty good movie.
It may be that I've just been starved for a zombie flick (wow, how long has it been
since you saw zombies on the big screen?), but as derivative as the walking dead
sequences were, I got a big thrill out of seeing them again. And remember when
George Romero was going to direct this?
I've never been a big Milla Jovavich fan, and I absolutely detest Michelle Rodriguez
(is it just me, or is she the spitting image of a bulldog?), but I managed to enjoy
the film anyway. Director Anderson's track record is a little shaky: if I hadn't
been driven to kill my foster parents by the music of Mortal Kombat,
I might have a positive opinion about it; I didn't despise Event Horizon
like tyranist did (in fact, I oughtta check it out again for the site), and I felt
Soldier was only mediocre, but this film had something over on both
of those . . . it was fun.
The final shot of the film was pretty astounding, even if the last ten minutes made no
sense at all. But hey, it was all based on a video game, and that medium's exactly
not known for its stories.
