The tyranist's thoughts
I'm a little embarrassed to admit it, but not only have I not read this book, I don't
even own a copy. For anyone who's seen my private library, it is utterly incomprehensible
that I wouldn't have even one copy of this around. My shame is deep. Perhaps a trip
to the used book store is warranted.
So a writer has returned to his roots in New England to write a book about a house
that scared him to death as a boy. Well, his timing couldn't be better, because it
just so happens that a vampire's moved into the house. People start disappearing
and he takes it upon himself to stop the evil.
This is pretty well-done and even a little frightening for a TV mini-series. When you
look at how old it is, it looks even better. I'm a fan of Stephen King's (I'd say as much
as the next man, but when the next man is Rish, I really can't compare) and it is
rare that an adaptation of his work is so successful. I may read the novel and think
otherwise, but just at the moment, I found that this version was entertaining and
interesting for its particular take on vampires. Not that it is any different from the
normal mythos, it's just fun to see vampires in New England.
The only real problem I had with the movie was Bonnie Bedelia. Sometimes I thought
she was perfect, sometimes I thought she looked anorexic. Sometimes she looked
entirely too young to be Ben's love interest. Sometimes she actually looked hot
enough that it didn't matter. Weird, the things you notice sometimes.
If you're a King fan at all you should probably have seen this one already. If you're
a vampire flick fan, then you probably should see it. Otherwise, it is up to you. The
movie is three hours long so you do have to make a little commitment.
