The tyranist's thoughts
Roger Corman has been responsible for more horror movies than any other man alive or dead. Some of them are fun to watch and some are not. This one falls into the latter category.
A lost French soldier (played by Uncle Jack) meets a strange young girl and falls in love. Of course, she is slowly being possessed by the dead spirit of a local Count's dead wife with the help of a kindly witch who only wants revenge on the Count (played by Boris Karloff). Did I mention that there is a horse in the movie?
I found myself sort of bored by the movie. It is actually an engaging plot idea that I felt they really failed to deliver on. Boris Karloff was as good as always and Jack Nicholson was unconvincingly French even though he really carried the majority of the movie. Sandra Knight does a fine job of playing the mysterious young woman. But then she was always good at that.
The real horror here is that I got a copy of the tape to watch. The shock ending wasn't even really much of a scare and ended up being confusing more than anything else. See it if you are some kind of Jack completist, but avoid it if you aren't.
