Rish Outfield's reviews
Tyranist doesn't like them, but I adore Horror anthologies. This one, coming out of nowhere
and boasting a terrible title, won't be changing that for me anytime soon.
John Ritter is a real estate agent out to sell a house to a young couple (the husband is
played by yet another of Dom Deluise's kids), and because of the full disclosure clause, he
tells them the stories behind each house they visit. "Nightmare"--the weakest story is first, in
which a superbabe is caught cheating on her husband, and death follows not long after.
"Bobo" was a well done tale in which a father fears his eight year old daughter's new pet
monkey is EVIL. And rightly so, of course. In "Come To Granny," a kid visits a psychiatrist,
and tells her the tale of a granny-faced killer and the psychic visions he has of each of the
victims.
I was impressed. Though not a high-budgeted film, it worked pretty well. It had a nice gothic
score--similar to Elfman's more ostentatious works--by Brian Tyler. It was a very
entertaining film, and used the advantage anthologies have (basically that some stories are
great as shorts but couldn't sustain a feature-length retelling) to good effect. My favourite
segment (and also the most maddening/frustrating) featured the dad from "Malcolm in
the Middle" (Brian Cranston). He did a fabulous job, going nuts completely believably and
sympathetically. John Ritter did a good job, too, portraying a character that was both funny
and sad (his segment was entitled "Make Me An Offer"). Generally the butt of much
mockery, Ritter really impressed me with his acting ability and likeablity here. And folks,
nobody makes more fun of John Ritter than one Rish Jebediah Outfield.
I'd Recommend It To: I really liked this one and I think anthology fans will too.
Note: Bound on DVD with Cherry Falls,
I actually found this one to be the better movie. Go figure.
The tyranist's thoughts
Anthologies are interesting. Sometimes I like the whole thing, sometimes one part
shines. What is interesting to me is that sometimes I find myself more bored
watching a 30 minute anthology segment than if I were watching an entire
feature.
The wrapper of this one, which features a nice and creepy John Ritter (did he remind
any one else of Gil from The Simspons?) is decent. It's a nice way to tie the stories
together and works a lot better than the average frame.
The first story bored me for the most part, but wrapped up interestingly. It seemed
that they were banking on suspense that hadn't been built. I had no emotional involvment
with the characters (well, almost none, Rachel York was pretty hot) and so the
mystery just didn't grab me.
Story two just kind of pissed me off. That little bitch of a daughter needed to be
slapped more than once. I also had a problem with the completely non-threatening
monkey. Perhaps there was a better story they could have used here. I'd have to
say that this was the real weakness of the trilogy.
Lastly, was the interesting psychic knows about killer story. It was predictable
but nice. I thought that it was probably the best told of the stories since it kept me
interested and kept me anticipating the next move. The way it is set up in the frame
was also nice.
Any one of the stories could have been expanded into a feature and really, all of
them have been told before in features. The production values were nice and the
theme of the anthology followed pretty well. If you like the anthologies, then try this
one. If you don't, then at least you have been warned.
