Rish Outfield's reviews
Besides Dawn of the Dead, I believe this was the first Dario Argento film
we watched for our site. I had been a bit reluctant to get any of the
Italian filmmakers' works, perhaps because I get enough bad dubbing from
Jackie Chan films. Nevertheless, tyranist persuaded me to check this out,
and I was more than pleasantly surprised. This was a thoughtful, emotional
film--a rarity. Dario just doesn't get his props here in America. He really
has a distinctive style and a body of work nigh-impossible to attain in the
States. A very cool film, the surprise ending was indeed a surprise, as
neither tyranist nor I saw it coming. There were some very sick moments, but
I really enjoyed it, and it made me rush out and rent more Argento flicks.
I'd Recommend It To: Someone looking for something different. But in a good way.
Note: Also, I've seen three horror movies with Piper Laurie in them in the
last year (The Faculty, Carrie, and this one). By tyranist's criteria,
she only needs one more to gain the title Scream Queen. Come on, Ms. Laurie, you can do it!
The tyranist's thoughts
Can you believe that this is the first Dario Argento directed movie that we have reviewed for the site. I can't. Anyway . . .
this movie is much better than I expected and had a lot of little things that I have never seen before. Imagine a bulimic
girl and junkie guy as the heroes in a story where they aren't even the targets of the killer. Piper Laurie is as good as
usual. I really liked Asia Argento. I have to admit that I was completely mislead as to who the killer was. Perhaps Rish
and I will have to review a few more Argento films in the near future.
