Rish Outfield's reviews
A bunch of very old-looking Miskatonic University students go into a dark house that shelters a creature of such hideousness, that merely seeing it drives men insane (I once knew a girl like that, but she was only ugly on the inside).
The premise wasn't too bad, but the film itself was really, really dumb. It was poorly-done, lacked any credibility, and none of the characters even approached likability. And what was with the stilted, pseudo-intellectual dialogue? The creature was very cool-looking (again, though, they showed it on the video cover, though it is not seen in the movie for an hour), but all of the work in the film obviously went into her costume.
Best Scare: A couple of quick glimpses of the monster startled me pretty well.

The tyranist's thoughts
H.P. Lovecraft has long been a favourite author of mine. The darkness and mystery with which he views the world appeals to my deepest senses. I guess you could see that coming, couldn't you. Still, adaptations of his work vary greatly in quality. Some, like Re-Animator, are wonderful and endearing. They truly capture the spirit of Lovecraft's work even if they don't follow the story exactly. Others, like Cthulhu Mansion are so bad that I wish there were a way to unaffiliate Lovecraft. These usually just try to use the title of a Lovecraft story or character or maybe plot to further an otherwise standard or sub-standard horror flick. Lovecraft is not standard.
The Unnamable sort of falls in the middle. The production was pretty bad with acting and dialogue unworthy of even the worst Lovecraft pastiche. I loathed that Miskatonic University appeared to have exactly one dozen students and no more. I hated that Randolph Carter was played as a completely distracted academic (instead of author) that was pretty much unphased by demonic darkness. I also hate that they showed the monster on the cover, but that is a different argument. To its advantage, they actually captured the original story very well. Their embellishments didn't completely destroy the mood and spirit of the story and there is a long list of elements that they kept the same. I like this particular story of Lovecraft's and I find their treatment more than fair. So much in fact, that I am completely willing to check out the sequel which is based on a different Lovecraft story (unusual, I know).
