The tyranist's thoughts
When you run a horror film review site, you try to pay attention to the movies that other people are reviewing. It is simply expedient. If they have reviewed a lot of movies that you haven't, you want to cover some of that ground so that you can offer similar services. This is one of those movies that lingers at the backs of those pages. Most people have heard of it, but few have reviewed it. I finally spotted a copy in a local Hollywood and had to add it to our growing volume.
The story is almost identical to the later Spellbinder (sorry if that gives too much away) with a man being drawn to a secluded, privately owned British isle by a missing child report. As his investigation progresses and we discover the depth of the island people's commitment to their religion, the horror increases.
Personally, I found the movie very fascinating and up until the end didn't think of it as horror at all. I almost threw down my skulls sheet. The very end of the movie, however, is actually one of the scariest things I've seen. The way tension is built to that point and then all truth is revealed works wonderfully. And I saw one of the highly cut versions. I am going to have to find a way to get my hands on the director's cut of this.
If you are into horror that centers around cults or devil worship and if you don't really need all the blood and death to get scared, you'll love this one. Plus there's that scene where Bond's future Miss Goodnight dances naked with wild abandon.

Rish's Reviews
I saw this film based on tyranist's recommendation, and found it a strange experience. It's certainly an unusual film, whether you like it or not. Images from this film continued to haunt me long after seeing it. And there's something really ballsy to be said for someone who would dare make a musical horror film.
But I also thought it was really cool, with a story that kept me guessing, and a mysterious, magical quality to it that carried me along until the surprising finale. Its star, Edward Woodward, is cool, and really carries you through the narrative, acting as a sort of everyman in a town full of wackos of varying degrees. Also good is Christopher Lee, suave and calm in his role that's sort of like the devil. He's probably today's greatest living Horror icon. The music was good (one of the songs really was great and I found myself humming it even while digging a shallow grave for my roommate the next night) and it featured a mind-blowing amount of nudity (I'm sorry, did it sound like I was complaining?).
I saw the extended cut on DVD, which was interesting in that the quality went up and down all through the movie, depending on which cut the scene (and indeed, even certain lines) was from. Apparently, the original negative was lost, and this was the best they could do.
