Rish Outfield's reviews
This was an original villain and an original concept for a horror film. It didn't seem
fully explored in the end, though. I guess that's why God made sequels.
Or is the Devil to blame?
Wishmaster was well-thought-out, though some of the wish-granting seemed
contrived and a little forced, and the guy-turns-into-glass part was downright stupid.
Still, some of the other evil-ways-of-granting-a-wish were very fun. Andrew
Divoff who plays the incredible Djinn (the most interesting-looking villain since
Hellraiser's Pinhead) was pretty great,
and his dialogue was usually very well-done. It was interesting to see Robert Englund
in a modern, non-Krueger part--it's perhaps a testament to his charisma that I never
despised his we're-supposed-to-hate-him character.
Best Scare: The title character was pretty awesome looking, and was somewhat scary.
I'd Recommend It To: I liked it. Maybe you will too.
The tyranist's thoughts
This one ended up being far better than my expectations. The end lacks some judicious
editing, but otherwise the movie is good. Even kind of scary at moments. The djinn is
fantastic. The make-up they did for him is perfect. I do wonder just how much Wes
Craven had to do with the film, but Kurtzman (normally a make-up guy) actually did a
fine job.
