Rish Outfield's reviews
I'm not sure what the title meant, but this was a very well-written sci-fi horror flick.
Tony's father Sam, who disappeared in a flash of light, returns three years later and seeks out his wife and son, but
the reunion is awkward. Everyone is mistrustful of Sam, except for Tony, who continues to adore him as Sam exhibits
frighteningly alien behaviour. A very simple story, but interesting. And very watchable. It was low-budget, early 80's
(love that synthesizer soundtrack), and very English. I think part of what I most liked about this was its Britishness:
the locale, the accents, the pace, the sensibility, etc. Future Bond Girl, Miriam D'Abo appears (sans clothes in one
too-brief scene), but aside from her, they were all unfamiliar faces. It wasn't entirely predictable either. For
example, a woman hears a suspicious noise outside her house, and what does she do? She locks all the doors and gets out
her rifle. Except for a couple of bizarre, silly moments, I found this to be an enjoyable, if pessimistic, film. And it
featured somewhat vile alien effects! Not much about the alien-father's motivations or reasoning is explained. In fact,
from time to time, I wondered if the creature wasn't entirely evil. I would have liked to know a little more, so I
found the ending not entirely satisfying, but still, it was worth a watch.
Best Scare: The sight of a part alien/part human skittering across the road.
