HFC's Haunted Houses Aplenty
In honour of the new Amityville Horror release (which unlike the original
looks like it might actually be scary), we'd like to present this quick list. Our ten
favourite Haunted House Movies! Of course, that brings up the question: what is and
what isn't a haunted house movie?
Well, to make a long explanation short, we'll just take a cue from our most frequently
asked question, and say, a haunted house movie is whatever we say it is.
Rish Outfield's Ten
- 10. The Changeling (1980). A modern classic.
- 9. Boogeyman (2005). Yeah. I needed ten. What are you gonna do about it?
- 8. The Grudge (2004). Is there a scarier movie out there? If so, I don't know of it.
- 7. The Forgotten One (1990). An undiscovered gem.
- 6. The Shining (1980). Up until the 21st Century, the scariest movie I saw.
- 5. The Others (2001). Very atmospheric and unique.
- 4. Haunted (1995). Excellent film. I think I ought to watch it again right now.
- 3. House (1986). One of my favourites as a kid, and now.
- 2. The Frighteners (1996). This is one of those films that gets better with every single viewing.
- 1. Poltergeist (1982). This wins purely for its nostalgia factor.
The tyranist's Ten
- 10. Thirteen Ghosts (2001). Rish thinks this invalidates my guild membership.
- 9. The Forgotten One (1990). If only for the red head.
- 8. The Changeling (1980). Probably the most subtle movie on this list.
- 6. House (1986). A little campy, but an awful lot of fun.
- 7. The Grudge (2004). Gives The Shining a run for movie I'd least like to watch alone in my house.
- 5. Poltergeist (1982). Didn't see it until recently. Very well done.
- 4. The Others (2001). I'm not a huge Nicole Kidman fan, but I can't argue with the quality of this one.
- 3. The Frighteners (1996). It's nice that people finally figured out that they could learn something from Peter Jackson.
- 2. The Shining (1980). Gave me nightmares as a child and again as an adult.
- 1. Haunted (1995). This probably wins because the novel is a favourite of mine as much as the movie earning it on its own.
