Living by the scriptures
My husband and I are serving as senior
missionaries in New
Zealand. Before we left we had a daughter-in-law who was very ill, and
we had been staying with them off and on to help out.
About nine months into our mission we received
word that her
health challenges were worse, and I was so concerned I felt we ought to
go home. That evening I told my husband we just had to call our country
director and talk with him, and tell him of my feelings. I knew,
though, that we could not make such a decision without praying, so we
knelt in prayer. The Spirit whispered that we needed to stay where we
were. I felt that I had to accept it, but was still so desperately
worried about our little family that I still could not feel at peace.
Later that evening, as we were getting ready for
bed, we picked
up our scriptures, as we read each night together from the Book of
Mormon. On this particular night, I wanted to find something that would
ease my pain, so I said a silent prayer and then opened up my triple
combination. It fell open to the 100th section of the Doctrine and
Covenants. We read verses one to four, and as I read tears came to my
eyes. It was truly an answer to our prayers, and finally I felt at
peace.
It is now several months later, and she is doing
better, and we
are so grateful we have a Father in Heaven who cares and watches over
us. We have gained a more sure testimony that He hears us and knows our
hearts and He helps us when we obey and ask and listen.
