John L. is one of two sons of Joseph Chester Whitnah. The 1900 Census lists John's occupation as a farmer. John and Alice were not survived by any children, their only known son having died at the age of three. However, they seem to have taken an active part in helping out family and raising other children. The 1900 Census lists a foster daughter, Gladys Maxwell, living with them. In addition, in 1916, John is living with his father, Joseph Chester, and was appointed his executor.
In 1919, John L. was in possession of a clock that was originally owned by his grandfather, William Burns Whitnah. John signed the inside of this clock in 1919, at that time possibly passing it on to his cousin, Harriett Newell Taylor. (See Timeless Treasures)
