Johannes Weitknegt Notes
Collected by Mary Whitnack Pugh

These notes were furnished to Mary Whitnack Pugh, by a genealogist she employed to search the family records, in the interest of her joining the D.A.R.

"Johannes Weitknegt" a paternal ancestor was admitted to membership in the North Branch of the Raritan Reformed Church in Somerset Co., New Jersey, on confession of faith, during the pastorate of the Rev. Mr. Theodous Jacobus Freylinghuysen, in the year 1728 - about nine years after the founding of that church and was later elected an Elder thereof. He is recorded as being an Elder in the year 1751. He was probably such during the pastorate of Dominies [?], Theodore J., and his son Rev. Mr. John Freylinghuysen and the Rev. Mr. Jacob R. Hardenburg and Rev. Mr. Simeon Van Artsdalen. Owing to differences which arose in the congregation of the North Branch Church, there was a division from which the Reformed Church of Neshains was organized in 1752, and established at a place of greater convenience to a number of the congregation. It's evident from the records that Johannes Weitknegt allied himself with the latter body, as from an entry in the history of Somerset Co. it is stated that in 1761 he contributed toward the erection of the Neshains Church.

The wife of Johannes was named Neeltge, and according to his will 1779-1783 filed at Trenton, N.J. they had the following children; Johannes, Cornelius, Peter, [your grandfather's great grandfather] Andrew, Hendricks, Abraham, Neeltge, Jannetge, Sarah. The son Peter, was baptized in the Reformed Church at Six Mile Run, New Brunswick, N.J. on the 1st day of January 1750. From 175th Anniversary of the Reformed Church, Reamington, N.J. Frist North Branch Church started building 1718 [Raritan River], destroyed by fire, it is thought in 1737.
