Copied by Roberta Whitnah from the Canton Register, March 1897:
At ten minutes of nine o'clock Wed. March 10, 1897, death mercifully terminated the suffering from blood poisoning of Andrew J. Whitnah at his old home just outside the southern limits of Canton.
Andrew J. Whitnah was born at West Liberty, West Va., Feb. 23, 1815. His father, William Burns Whitnah, a native of Va. moved his family to Livingston Co. N.Y. in 1819. In 1832 the family went to Michigan, and four years afterward occurred the marriage of A.J. Whitnah to Miss Elizabeth Hendershott of N.Y. The wedding was April 12, and two days later the family started in wagons for Galena, Ill., but on account of the scarcity of provisions the paln was changed to Ottawa and the journey continued down the Illinois river to Fulton Co. which has been the home of the family ever since. The home of Mr. and Mrs. A.J. Whitnah was a fine farm just south of the city, and to them were born 11 children three of whom remain. Mrs. Effie Harmison of Cuba, J.C. Whitnah of Clarinda Iowa and Mrs. Harriet Taylor of this vicinity and her two daughters, Annie and Evelyn. Besides the son and daughters mentioned the descendants consist of 23 grandchildren and 19 great grand children.
