Elizabeth Chase Whitnah, 74, a Washington area resident since 1958 who belonged to churches and was active in religious work, died Oct. 5 at Fauquier Hospital. She had cancer.
Mrs. Whitnah, a Warrenton resident since 1993, had lived in Bethesda. She was born in Kansas City, Mo., and raised in Elizabeth, N.J.
After moving here, she joined Fourth Presbyterian Church in Bethesda and later belonged to the Episcopal Church of the Apostles in Fairfax.
Over the years, she had led church and neighborhood Bible study classes, had hosted musical evenings and had participated in high school forums on Christianity. She had worked with city youths as well as Cambodian and Ethiopian immigrants.

Elizabeth Chase Whitnah, 74, of Warrenton, died Oct. 5, 1998, at Fauquier Hospital following complications of cancer.
Mrs. Whitnah was born in Kansas City, Mo., on March 26, 1924. Her childhood was spent in Englewood and Elizabeth, N.J. She graduated from Battin High School in Elizabeth, where she received numerous academic and extracurricular awards. She majored in music at Wheaton College, Wheaton, Ill. After graduation in 1946 she returned to New Jersey and began her lifelong involvement in cross-cultural ministry by helping to start an inner-city church.
In 1951 she married ... and they moved to Bethesda, Md., in 1958. She led church and neighborhood Bible studies and informal musical evenings in their home, and high school forums on Christianity. She hosted Bible studies and suppers for inner city youth and later worked with Cambodian and Ethiopian refugees. She was a member of the Church of the Apostles (Episcopal) in Fairfax. In 1993 she and her husband moved to Warrenton.

Burial was private in Warrenton. A memorial service will take place at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, at Truro Episcopal Church in Fairfax.
