Advocacy: NIH Budget Increase In the Senate

Senators Arlen Specter (R-PA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) recently announced that they are going to offer an amendment to the Senate FY09 Budget Resolution (Senate Concurrent Resolution 70) that would provide significant new funding for the NIH.

A vote on the Specter/Harkin amendment could occur anytime in the next few days.  We would encourage you to contact your two senators and explain to the aide what SADS is and how it impacts you and your family and how important research is to saving the lives of your loved ones, then urge them to approve the amendment to Senate FY09 Budget Resolution providing more research dollars to the NIH.

If you don't know who your two senators are or how to get in touch with them, please visit www.senate.gov or call the Senate switchboard at (202) 224-3121.  Thank You!

See the letter we've sent to Senator's Hatch and Bennet.

Good Morning America Segment: “Lifesaving Test Held Up By Paperwork”

A 4-year-old boy, a potentially life-threatening disease, and a genetic test that would provide vital information to combat Sudden Cardiac Death. CJ Lafortune unfortunately, has met with the same hardships that so many of our SADS volunteers have encountered with regard to diagnosis, insurance coverage, and appropriate treatment. However, this young boy is fortunate in three regards: he survived a cardiac arrest, was diagnosed with Long QT Syndrome early, and is now enjoying the benefits of coverage for his genetic testing—thanks to a few friends at Good Morning America.
