Nicholas Strayer was born in 1794 in Berkeley County, Virginia, son of John Nicholas Strayer and Catharine Marie Staley. In Jun 1813(1) he married Rebecca Whitnah, daughter of Henry F. Whitenah and Margaret Burns. Nicholas and Rebecca had four children before Rebecca passed away on January 15, 1827. She is buried in present-day Washington County, Maryland.

Shortly before or after Rebecca's death, Nicholas moved to Indian Springs, Maryland. Here he married Emelin Snyder and had three children. The Strayers moved again to Logan County, Ohio where a fourth child was born. Emelin passed away on October 29, 1832. Nicholas married for a third time and had eleven children. In all, Nicholas fathered 19 children.


Nicholas Strayer and Rebecca Whitnah are the parents of the following children:
  1. Catherine Strayer. Catharine married Amos Chester. They lived in Logan County, Ohio.
  2. Sarah Ann Strayer
  3. Margaret Strayer, married C.C. Cookston and lived in Logan County, Ohio.
  4. Joseph Strayer, married Delila A. and lived in Logan County, Ohio.
