Variometer Practice
Got a
vario? Can you set it to indicate 400fpm UP, while it is sitting on the table?
If that is not easy for you, then you should practice listening to the
vario sounds until you can identify the vertical speed fairly accurately by the
sound only, without looking at the meter read-out. *Then* look at the meter
briefly, to see how close your "reading" of the sound was. It will help you when
thermalling, if you practice this "listening" skill until you get fairly good at
it. You should know what 200fpm, 400fpm, and 600fpm sound like, enough to set
those readings rather accurately, while holding the vario with your eyes closed.
You will have enough to occupy your attention up there; you should not have
to look at the vario read-out, to know something that your ears could tell you
automagically, on-the-fly, if you will pardon the pun.
