I was at the 2005 Fangoria Weekend of Horrors convention when I first heard Mick Garris talk about the "Masters of Horror" series. Commissioned by Anchor Bay Entertainment, a dozen short film were to be made by some of the horror industry's finest filmmakers. They got to do any story they wanted, in any way that they wanted (although there were a couple of amusing rules they couldn't break; for example, there could be no full frontal male nudity, and there could be no violence committed on a child by another child [violence to adults by children or children to adults was fine though]). Sounded great to me.
The television network Showtime heard about it and wanted to put it on the air. John Carpenter, John Landis, Dario Argento, Tobe Hooper, George A. Romero, Roger Corman, Clive Barker, Joe Lansdale, Don Coscarelli, Joe Dante (many of whom were in the audience and stood up to take a bow), the list of names went on and on. Unfortunately, neither tyranist nor I had the Showtime network, so we were unable to see the series as it originally aired. Once again, thanks to Anchor Bay, we can see something on home video, as they put the series out, episode by episode, on DVD. As they release 'em, we'll review 'em.Episode 1: Incident On and Off a Mountain Road
