Carroll Henry Whitnah was named for his grandfather, Eli Carroll Whitnah. He grew up in Nebraska, and in 1911 enrolled at the University of Nebraska with the intent of studying Mechanical Engineering. But his interests led him to Chemistry, eventually earning a Ph.D.(2)
Carroll received a fellowship to start a Chemistry department in Burma, and it was while there that he met his wife, Mildred Pope. Mildred's parents were opposed to their marriage, her family being Methodists while Carroll had been raised a Baptist.(3)
After returning to the US, Carroll taught at Kansas State for many years as a milk chemist. It was while here that he developed the process for milk Homogenization. His granddaughter, Cheryl Higgins, writes: "When I was growing up I thought the word was 'Home Gooden Sized' and he had invented the carton, being a good size for the home. He was getting grants... for federal money which was being made available at that time to develop ways of preserving foods long enough for them to get out of the heartland and off the farms into the cities - nutritional studies to benefit children."(4)
