Located in North East Africa thirty-eight miles North West of Uganda and twenty-
Eight miles North East of Congo, Yei is a town and home to many displaced people victims of
the forty-three years civil war in the Sudan. Yei is a center of gravity for the
Sudanese air force planes especially the high altitude Russian made Antinove.
In December 2000 the U.S. Commission for refugees reported that "Sudan government planes have bombed civilian sites at least 132 times in the year 2000, compared to 65 known aerial bombings in 1999. The intensified bombing campaign continues to kill and terrorize innocent civilians, disrupt international relief efforts, and push families from their land and livelihoods. Sudanese government aircraft have struck civilian and humanitarian targets at least 259 times during the past four years.” Fifty-five of these 132 bombings were in the town of Yei. The only hospital in Yei, run by a Norwegian charity organization, suffered severe damages during the bombings. These civilian assaults have caused the loss of people’s homes, damage to the town’s infrastructure, and a huge crippling of education. Many schools have been damaged or shut-down, and many students have been forced to stop their schooling. There is a great need for investment in rebuilding schools and for higher education scholarships for those few students who have mananged to finish high school. |
