To achieve the authentic speckle finish on your cabinet, over the basecoat,
but before stenciling, use thinned grey, red, blue, or whatever color of
paint is appropriate, and an old toothbrush. Dip the toothbrush in the
thinned paint and hold about a foot from the cabinet surface. Scrape your
fingernail across the surface of the brush. Doing this will create a random
pattern of various sized speckles on the cabinet and almost anything else
nearby. Repeat until you get a nice even scattering all around the
cabinet.
