A 9-volt battery is also useful for testing relay coils. The spacing of the
coil lugs are about the same as the battery terminals. Just press the
battery up against the relay coil lugs. A few coils will close on their
own, but most will need to be closed by hand for testing. All will
hold with the 9-volt current and removing the battery will release the
relay. If the coil doesn't hold then you know that you have a bad relay
coil.
