Sometimes when a coil has a serious meltdown the metal plunger is frozen
inside the melted coil. This plunger can usually be easily saved and
reused. To remove the plunger from the burnt coil, remove the coil from the
machine. Place the coil on some concrete or other hard surface and using a
hammer give the coil a couple of good whacks. The wire of the coil will
separate and with a little pulling and a couple more whacks you'll have the
plunger free.
Most plungers will just need a little cleaning, but many older EM Bally
plungers have a short nylon collar that may have to be replaced before it
can be reused.
