Mr. Pinball Tip:

My game (EM or SS) keeps resetting the drop targets and clicking at the outhole perpetually whenever I start a game.

This is likely a stuck outhole switch. Check under the playfield where the ball leaves the playfield and the ball rests. See if the switch opens when a ball is not resting on the switch.

The funniest instance of this was a 1984 Gottlieb Jacks To Open with this problem, and a stuck standup switch. The machine kicks the ball out. It immediately scores the standup points, and then tries to kick the ball out again, thinking the first ball is over in only 1 second or so. It continues doing this until all the balls have been counted and then declares the game over. The entire 5 ball game takes 5-10 seconds!
