I came up with a way initially to make my chimes sound better but it ended up making the whole game play better/faster/more fun. I had to get rid of that awful-sounding tone board in my Charlie's Angels (System 1) and convert to chimes, but they would ring weakly and intermittently (solid state controls them faster than they were responding). I add in a 2200uF 50V capacitor to the 24 volt solenoid circuit. This raises the nominal operating voltage for all solenoids to around 30 Volts and makes the chimes louder/work with transistor control better. I solder the positive end of the capacitor to the banded lug end of the knocker solenoid (where I get my juice to power the chime unit daisy chain) and then solder a 1 ohm resistor to the negative end of the capacitor before running a wire from that resistor to the ground plane. Pop bumpers, slingshot, flippers and of course chimes work better than they ever have.
