After Install of the palace client there are a couple of things you might need to do to ensure you can hear Midi Music and Wav files provided by the Palace servers
the Mac 3.5.1 palace client can recognize and initiate any variety of files provided by the server but you will need to set a few things in your internet control panel to make it all happen...and you may want additional players to "help"Media INFO
Wavs
the palace client uses wav files as a basic sound. Much like your system Beep but in wav format
Mac palace wavs for mat is 11025 HZ or 22050HZ / 8bit linear(PCM) - Mono
WITH THE .WAV extension to the filename taken off
the playing of wav files is internal to the Client...which Means If you have a soundfile named: applausse
the Palace client will expect it to be a standard wav file and play it internally
in a chat room if you type )applausse
and hit return. There are a different type of Sound files commonly called Wavs or compressed MP3WAVS THESE ARE NOT the same WAVS that Mac palace recognizes as its internal format they are MPEG layer 3 Compressed and if you attempt to play one as a palace internal wav with the extension off you will hear awful noise not a sound.Since the palace Client will automatically recognize & play standard wav files with no extension and 8 bit PCM compression....the other type of wavs will need a helper application to play them.
And you will need to map the .wav extension to Qtime Player (or appropriate helper) in internet control panels filetypes.Midi
Midi Music files are small text files that control a component of your Quicktime to make a full song play rather than just a Sound.....Midi is NOT a recording of a sound but rather set of commands that control software based sound synthesizers in your Mac software. so the files sizes are SMALL
Palace does not have the capability to decode & synthesize these sounds SO it passes off the file to a helper that can do it. the MAC 3.5.1 client will try to recognize when a midi file is asked to be played by seeing if it has a .mid extension to the filename, the palace client will "ask" the application you specify to play midifiles, even if someone besides yourself keys the command
like )amidifile.mid
You can set up InternetControl Panel to have .mid and .midi files routed to an application such as SoundApp. Then, you can type ")titanic.mid" and if it is in your Media folder, it will play in SoundApp. or Quicktime player You can also use the SOUND command to retrieve and/or play filesfrom the server. This can be done via room scripts or by typing /"titanic.mid" SOUND to initiate download.SO how do you tell your client what OTHER application is available to play the midi??
USE your internet control panel to tell Applications to help Palace play other types of Media like MIDI.
Most likely it is Set to use Quicktime Player but I am using sound app
SoundApp is a freeware sound playing application that you can download and install to play midi
you can download soundApp at the page linked to the above logoThe following are screen shots Of how I set up My computer to recognize .mid files as a SoundAPP file.
Open your Internet control Panel to the advanced tab and you will see something like:click into Filemapping, Scroll Down to .mid extensions you may or MAY NOT see that there is an application icon out next to it..we are ONLY concerned with the 2 items I have circled in RED above they are the ones that will control palace midi
NOT .midi ....but rather .mid with a thingy that says midi music out to the side
.mid select the first .mid | midi music |....... item
( this is a audio/midi mime type...thesecond one is audio/x-midi mimetype)
click intothe first one twice till you get:
TIP turn the baloon help on to see what the Doohickys are for. And make sure you SAVE when you close the control panel!
Mapping on older Os 8 control panels for .
mp3 to SoundApp would look like this
I use SoundJam for .mp3 playback so my os 9 settings look like:
Clear as MUD right!! well Really you are going to have to mess with it & figure it out
in 6 years I havent been able to get a good grip on all this stuff ...there are ALOT of variables for different Mac OS & your software particular set ups My advice...make a test set of settings and then experiment...
Basically what you need to realize is: you are telling your computer to take unknown files coming off the internet and by looking at the 3 letter extension... make an appropriate application responsible for the file.
If you are Using Mac Client 2.5
The Easy way to set up For Midi Is to set up the Midi in os 9 to be played by Quicktime Player. Once you are rebooted back in OS X, remember to Pre start your OS X Qtime Player when visiting a Palace. Otherwise your midi may play in your OS X Qtime player at the same time its Playing in 9 under classic
which is a horrible experience HAHA
- Drag your palace preferences file OUT of your system Folder/Preferences and INTO your palace folder
Next to your palace application. This allows you to have MULTIPLE Clients intalled. You can be in 2 palaces at once IF the preferences are moved out of the system Folder/Preferences and INTO your palace folders.- Make a copy of your Palace.prp and Cyborg.ipt (create a new folder called backup for example hold the option key down & drag Palace.prp and Cyborg.ipt into the new folder....this will put a "clean" copy of these files into the backup folder for safe keeping ....in case the ones you use ever become corrupt. If they ever DO you will have a clean copy
- Multiple propbags can be made by copying the Palace.prp file and renaming it for safe keeping. Whatever propfile is named Palace.prp living alongside your palace application in the same folder when you start the application, is what your avatars will be. NEVER rename & move bags with the palace client running!
- TURN YOUR SPEECH ON FOR HEAVENS SAKE!!! Mac Palace uses Macintalk to let you HEAR people talk While your PC freinds are reading text in logs you can just hear whats going on ....MUCH easier! use the "speak as" command from the options Menu.
- Allocate more RAM to the palace application! 9751K is what you really need for it and is what you get if you dont mess with it. IF you have extra ram do a get info on the Palace Application and adjust the ram ...maybe to 32MB as is recommended by the programmers.....I have palaced for YEARS with the 3.5.1 client ram allocation set at set at (9.7 MB) and it works fine...If you are having trouble UP your ram allocation to the palace application
