John worked for a time as a coal miner and was a War veteran, having served in Illinois Company B 101 Illinois Infantry(8).

In 1881, Annie Cruser, daughter of Sarah (Sally) Whitnah and Frank Cruser, was living with her uncle, J.S. Whitnah and his wife. See Descendants of Garret Dircksen Croesen (Kroesen), Sr..

  4. Fulton County Cemetary Inscriptions. There is some doubt about John's death date. Another J.S. Whitnah died 22 Oct 1920 for which I have not been able to match to a person. A family photo states John died at age 73. However, he died before his wife based on the probate records.
