Joseph Henry Whitnah, Jr. was born on the 9th of March, 1826 and given the name of his father. In 1837 he moved to Ohio(1), and worked on his father's farm. On April 4, 1854 he married Mary Tuttle in Ironton County, Ohio(2).

After Mary's death on December 5, 1863, Joseph married Margaret Daugherty, daughter of John Daugherty and Elizabeth Walthour. Joseph Henry Whitnah, Jr. and Mary E. Tuttle are the parents of the following children:
  1. Joseph C. Whitnah
  2. Ruth Evelyn Whitnah, born 29 Jul 1857 in Missouri. She died at age 2 in Iron County, Missouri on July 18, 1860.
  3. Clara Loretta Whitnah, born 3 Jan 1862 in Missouri. On September 4, 1883 in Iron County Missouri she married Henry Twomey(3). She died in August of 1914 in Ironton, Iron County, Missouri.
