"Diet and exercise are essential components in the treatment of patients with diabetes. It has been shown that 80% of Type II diabetic patients are overweight; therefore, exercise and meal planning should be a focus to achieve weight loss. A weight loss of 5-10% of one's total body weight has been shown to be beneficial for lowering blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels. Exercise can decrese insulin resistance and increase sensitivity of the cells to insulin which leads to an overall decrease in glucose levels. Before getting started consult your physician, pharmacist, or other healthcare team member on the proper way to initiate a plan that is suitable for you." - Trip

Recommendations & Helpful Hints:

  • Eat meals at set times to maintain an even sugar level.
  • The utilization of zinc and essential fatty acids (GLA) may be helpful. Use fatty acids such as flaxseed oil or salmon oil.
  • Eat a high complex carbohydrate, fiber rich, low fat, low sugar diet with plenty of raw fruits and vegetables as well as fresh vegetable juices. This reduces the need for insulin and also lowers the level of fat in the blood. Fiber helps to reduce blood sugar surges. Legumes, whole grains, roots and other fresh vegetables are excellent.
