Friday, June 8, 2001 Las Vegas, Hoover Dam and Valley of Fire As we had overstayed our welcome as guests of Merlin at his castle, the Excalibur, we checked out and began a new journey. We first went next door to the Luxor Pyramid and enjoyed lunch then we traveled to the south to explore one of the seven engineering wonders of the world -- the Hoover Dam. We then traveled to the north along the banks of Lake Mead to a favorite childhood campsite -- Valley of Fire (which surly held true to its namesake). Luxor Pharaoh and Cleopatra were honored that the famous, world-traveling Gilberts would pose for a picture with them. Alena and Ashlyn show their stuff in front of the Sphinx . It is mostly red sandstone formations that have been shaped by wind and water to create holes, crevices, etc. It's also a really fun place for kids to hike and play, which the girls did as soon as we opened the door of the car. We were kinda crazy to camp in the desert in June, but I thought it would be fun. It worked out okay, though. We arrived at our campsite at about 7:30pm. Some clouds had rolled in and the afternoon heat had subsided a bit. Sleeping was difficult at first. The temperature dropped to only about 90° by morning. In the morning, we packed up early and were ready to leave by 9:30am, which was already too late for us as we were roasting at around 105°. Over all, it was fun. The girls enjoyed climbing all over and I was able to find our favorite camp site from my childhood. Another beautiful sunset
