Squire for a day - Hauser begrudgingly allowed Calais to be temporarily assigned to the commander of Wolf company. Lord Eric Venns was a paladin with years of service in The Chalice. As Calais quickly observed, Venns is a man with a storied past. He was not shy about assigning the most menial task to Calais without gratitude or courtesy. Even Venns' own men seem to know to keep their distance.
Venns capped off the day by giving his "nature of evil" speech. The grizzly scars appearance on his body must have a bearing on his current disposition.

Do you know the nature of evil? Do you know its depths, its mysteries? I do.. I've seen it, you understand... felt its cold embrace. I've walked the shadowy pathways of the dead... heard the wails of despair, seen the columns of the damned.. emaciated, haunted, empty.. marching to nowhere.

Evil.. what are we without it? It gives us purpose, doesn't it? And in the end, we feed it, don't we? That's the great humor of it.. We pursue our cause of righteousness, so secure in the knowledge that we are Cuthbert's chosen defenders, and in doing so we serve Evil's purposes.. We serve it and feed it..
