Joseph Henry Whitnah, Jr. was born on the 9th of March, 1826 and given the name of his father. In 1837 he moved to Ohio(1), and worked on his father's farm. On April 4, 1854 he married Mary E. Tuttle in Ironton County, Ohio(2).
After the death of his first wife, Joseph married Margaret Daugherty on 31 Aug 1865(3), daughter of John Daugherty and Elizabeth Walthour. Margaret Daugherty was born 13 Apr 1832 in Pennsylvania, and was a descendant of several prominent families who played a big part in the founding and settlement of Westmoreland County of that state.
Joseph and Margaret lived most of their lives together in Ironton, Iron County, Missouri. She died 18 Feb 1879 or 1880 of pneumonia.
